The genus Sympecma ( 3 species)
Sympecma:
Burmeister 1839
Diagnosis:
Type species:
Agrion phallatum Charpentier 1825 = Agrion fusca Vander Linden, 1820 by monotypy
Comments:
(barbarous (and inadvertent)) emendation of Charpentier's manuscript name Sympycna (published Charpentier 1840). Bridges (1993) asserts Burmeister did not use Sympecma as a generic name and the authorship should be Selys 1840. My reading is that it appears on p823 as a generic reference [RR]. Jödicke 1997 credits the generic name to Burmeister. Fliedner 2006 discusses etymology.
cf Sympegma St. Quentin, 1970, Sympygna St Quentin, 1970, Sympycna Charpentier, 1840.
Usage (all major taxonomists) was Sympycna (Charp.) until May (1928) resurrected Sympecma from obscurity ...
Commentary:
Jödicke 1997 found extant larval keys unreliable.
